21 JAN 44
The day’s first log entry:
“At 0350 ceased zigzagging, changing fleet course right to 265˚ at 0400 observation of guide and remainder of formation proved this course change to be in error in the night orders and actual course was requested from O.T.C. via TBS. At 043- fleet course changed to 190˚. At 0435 regained proper station.”
Well done shoes!
“TBS” is an acronym for “Talk Between Ships” which was a critical communication component on all Naval vessels at the time. TBS was a high frequency, and therefore short range system which enabled Task Group units to communicate with increased confidence that communication would not be intercepted by the enemy. https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval-history-magazine/2017/august/talking-between-ships
Training continued. “Maneuvered on various courses in obedience to emergency signals from O.T.C. during simulated attacks on vessels of this Task Group by our own air groups.”
Flight operations and tactical fleet maneuvers continued at a heavy pace throughout the day, the last log entry of the day indication a resumption of zigzagging at 2010.
No aircraft crashes. No injuries. A fine Navy Day.
Princeton and TG 58.4 seem to be progressing nicely. The Marshall Islands await.
